Welcome to my Biokinetics Blog!
A quick intro about me…
I come from the hot and humid province of KZN but have since become a Cape Town local after braving (the very afrikaans!) Stellenbosch University to get my Honours and Masters degree. I’m hopelessly addicted to sport (playing and watching) which really fueled my passion to become a Biokineticist.
Introducing yourself as a Biokineticist often gets an interested but slightly clueless look on people’s faces. They’ve heard of the profession but they often don’t know what we do exactly. So I’ll give it a go of explaining it in a simple way…
Basically, I use exercise to help people get their bodies back to 100% after an injury, whether it occurred on the sports field, car accident or even slipping on a wet floor . I personally know how tough it is to have to sit on the sideline with an injury so it’s great to be able to help fellow sportsmen and women.
There’s also an interesting side to Biokinetics which deals with chronic illnesses and diseases. After someone has seen the doctor and been diagnosed with say, diabetes/ high cholesterol or they have had a stroke for example, they get their medication and try make the most of it. What people don’t always know is that they often need a bit of extra support to help their body’s work better. That’s where I come in:)
The benefits of exercise have finally been realized by doctors and scientists and to quote what I heard at the SASMA (South African Sports Medicine Association) conference last year, “Exercise is Medicine”. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not claiming to cure HIV aids or cancer, but the effects of exercise for people with chronic conditions are unbelievably positive (if I may add: “life-changing” to quote a previous patient).
Biokinetics is definitely the way forward in helping the population to reduce their risk factors for diseases and to improve their health and fitness!!
